Clean refrigerator coils every 6 to 12 months, or sooner if they are visibly dusty. Homes with shedding pets, dusty floors, or a fridge in a tight space may need coil checks more often.

Quick schedule

  • Every 6 to 12 months: check and clean coils for most homes.
  • More often: pets, dust, nearby litter boxes, or coils that load quickly.
  • Sooner: fridge runs constantly, feels hot around the grille, or cooling seems weak.
  • Always: follow your refrigerator manual for access and safety.

Why coils matter

Refrigerator coils help release heat. When dust and pet hair cover them, the refrigerator has a harder time moving heat away from the cabinet. That can make the compressor run longer and use more energy.

The fridge may still keep food cold at first, which is why this task gets ignored.

Where to find the coils

Coils are usually behind the front toe grille, underneath the refrigerator, or on the back. The location depends on the model. If you can't see them, search the model number and manual.

Be careful moving a refrigerator with a water line. Don't yank the unit forward if the line, power cord, or flooring could be damaged.

How to clean them

  1. Check the manual for your model.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator if the manual says to or if you will be working near electrical parts.
  3. Remove the toe grille or access panel.
  4. Use a coil brush to loosen dust and pet hair.
  5. Vacuum debris gently.
  6. Reinstall panels and make sure airflow isn't blocked.

Signs the coils need attention

  • Dust or pet hair visible under the fridge.
  • The refrigerator runs longer than usual.
  • The front grille area feels warm.
  • Food temperature becomes inconsistent.
  • The kitchen has heavy dust or pet hair.

When coil cleaning isn't enough

If the refrigerator isn't cooling after the coils are clean, check door seals, temperature settings, blocked vents, and whether the condenser fan is running. A sealed system, compressor, or control issue is repair territory.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Every 6 to 12 months: inspect and clean coils.
  • Every few months: check sooner if you have pets or visible dust buildup.
  • At each cleaning: vacuum nearby floor dust so the coils don't reload immediately.
