If your dishwasher smells bad, start with trapped food and standing water. Check the filter, drain area, door gasket, spray arms, and sink or garbage disposal connection before assuming the dishwasher is failing.

Quick checks first

  • Clean the dishwasher filter if your model has one.
  • Look for food debris in the bottom of the tub.
  • Wipe the door gasket and lower door edge.
  • Check spray arm holes for trapped debris.
  • Look for standing water after a cycle.
  • If connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the sink side drains well.
  • Run a cleaning cycle according to the manual.

Clean the filter

Many modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. If food collects there, the dishwasher can smell sour, musty, or garbage like.

Remove the lower rack, twist out the filter according to the manual, rinse it under warm water, and use a soft brush for stuck debris. Reinstall it so it locks fully in place.

Check the drain area

Look under the lower spray arm and around the sump area. Food scraps, labels, glass, and small plastic pieces can collect where water drains.

If water remains in the bottom after a cycle, the smell may be a drainage issue. Check the filter, drain hose, sink air gap if present, and garbage disposal connection.

Wipe the gasket and door edge

The rubber gasket and lower door edge can hold grease, detergent residue, and food film. Wipe them with warm water and mild soap. Use a soft brush for corners if needed.

Don't use harsh cleaners unless the manual allows them. The goal is to remove buildup without damaging seals.

Check spray arms

Spray arm holes can trap seeds, rice, mineral scale, and tiny bits of food. If water isn't spraying well, food stays behind and odor returns.

Make sure the arms spin freely and clean clogged holes according to the manual.

Run a cleaning cycle

After removing debris, run the cleaning cycle your manual recommends. Many dishwashers can use a dishwasher cleaner or a specific hot cycle, but instructions vary by model.

Cleaning products work better after the filter and drain area are cleared. Otherwise you are perfuming the problem.

When smell means a bigger issue

  • Standing water remains after every cycle.
  • The sink backs up when the dishwasher drains.
  • The smell is sewage like rather than food like.
  • The drain hose is incorrectly routed.
  • There is leaking under the dishwasher or cabinet.

Those are drainage or plumbing clues, not just cleaning reminders.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Monthly: clean the filter if you use the dishwasher often.
  • As needed: wipe the gasket and lower door edge.
  • After odor: check filter, drain area, spray arms, and standing water.
  • Ongoing: scrape large food pieces before loading.
