Check the exterior dryer vent while the dryer is running. The flap or cover should open and you should feel steady airflow. If the cover barely moves, lint is packed around it, or warm damp air isn't exhausting outside, stop guessing and inspect the vent path.

What to check outside

  • The flap opens when the dryer runs.
  • Airflow feels steady, not weak or pulsing.
  • Lint isn't packed around the hood.
  • The cover isn't crushed, painted shut, or blocked by plants.
  • There is no bird nest, pest screen clog, or snow blocking the outlet.

Why the outside check matters

The lint screen only catches part of the lint. The rest moves through the vent system. If the exterior outlet is blocked, the dryer can't move humid air out of the house well. That can mean longer dry times, hotter dryer surfaces, and lint collecting where you don't want it.

How to check safely

  1. Start a timed dry cycle with a small damp load.
  2. Go outside and find the dryer outlet.
  3. Watch whether the flap opens.
  4. Feel for airflow without putting fingers into the vent.
  5. Clear only loose lint at the outlet if you can reach it safely.

If the outlet is high, hard to reach, or packed inside the duct, hire vent cleaning. Don't climb a sketchy ladder for a lint clog.

Signs the problem is deeper

  • Clothes need a second cycle.
  • The dryer gets unusually hot.
  • The laundry room feels damp or warm.
  • The exterior flap doesn't open.
  • Lint returns quickly after you clear the outlet.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Check the outside vent every few months and any time drying slows.
  • Also check after heavy snow, landscaping, exterior painting, pest activity, or work near the vent hood.
