Clean the washing machine drain pump filter when the washer drains slowly, smells musty, leaves clothes wetter than usual, or your manual calls for regular cleaning. Many front load washers have one, but not every machine does.
Signs the drain pump filter needs attention
- Clothes are wetter than usual after the spin cycle.
- The washer drains slowly or pauses with water inside.
- You hear unusual pump noise.
- The washer smells musty even after cleaning the gasket.
- You get a drain or pump error code.
- Small items have gone missing in the wash.
Where the filter usually is
On many front load washers, the drain pump filter sits behind a small access door near the lower front of the machine. Some top load washers don't have a user serviceable pump filter. Check the manual before forcing any panel open.
How often to clean it
If your manual gives a schedule, follow that. Samsung publishes model specific pump filter cleaning steps, and some washers don't have a user serviceable pump filter at all. If your manual doesn't give a schedule, checking every few months is reasonable for homes that wash pet items, rugs, heavily soiled clothes, or small items that shed debris. If the washer is performing well and the manual doesn't call for cleaning, don't invent a complicated routine.
How to clean it safely
- Turn the washer off.
- Place towels and a shallow pan under the access area.
- Use the small drain hose first if your washer has one.
- Open the filter slowly because water may come out.
- Remove lint, coins, hair pins, fabric pieces, and debris.
- Rinse the filter and wipe the housing.
- Reinstall the filter firmly, then run a short rinse cycle and check for leaks.
Don't open the filter immediately after a hot cycle. Water inside may be hot. If the filter won't turn, don't force it with tools unless the manual says to.
What this won't fix
Cleaning the filter won't fix a failed drain pump, kinked drain hose, clogged standpipe, broken lid switch, or control problem. If the washer still won't drain after the filter is clear, move from maintenance to repair.
Good maintenance rhythm
- After loads: leave the door open if your front loader manual allows it.
- Weekly or as needed: wipe the gasket if lint, hair, or residue collects there.
- Every few months: check the drain pump filter if your washer has a user serviceable one.
- Sooner: check it if drainage slows, clothes come out unusually wet, odors return, or the washer shows a drain error.
- Every load: empty pockets before washing so coins, hair pins, and debris don't end up in the filter.
