A useful monthly home maintenance checklist is short: check filters, alarms, leaks, drains, dryer airflow, toilets, and anything that changed after weather. If the list is too long, you will stop doing it.

The monthly checklist

  • Check the HVAC filter and replace it if dirty.
  • Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Look under sinks for leaks, stains, swelling, or musty smells.
  • Check toilets for running water or leaks around the base.
  • Clean or inspect the dishwasher filter.
  • Clean range hood filters if you cook often.
  • Watch dryer performance and confirm the exterior vent opens.
  • Check water softener salt if you have a softener.
  • Walk the outside after heavy rain or wind.
  • Review the next seasonal task before it becomes urgent.

Check HVAC filters

Check filters monthly, especially during heavy heating or cooling months. Replace the filter if it is gray, visibly loaded, bowed, or blocking airflow. Many homes land around every 1 to 3 months, but pets, smoke, dust, renovation work, and long run times shorten the interval.

Install the filter with the airflow arrow pointing toward the furnace or air handler. If the size is annoying to remember, save it now.

Test alarms

Press the test button on each smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm. Replace batteries when needed unless the unit has a sealed battery. Replace the full alarm at the age listed on the unit or in the manual. Smoke alarms are commonly replaced at 10 years.

Look under sinks and around toilets

Open sink cabinets and look for moisture, swelling, rust, stains, or a musty smell. Run water for a minute and watch the drain connections. Guest baths and utility sinks are the ones people forget.

For toilets, listen for random refilling when nobody flushed. Check around the base for water, softness, or staining. A slow leak can damage flooring before it becomes obvious.

Check dishwasher and range hood filters

If your dishwasher has a removable filter, check it about monthly if you use it often. Food debris, grit on glasses, or sour smells mean it needs attention sooner. If you use the dishwasher lightly, the interval can be longer.

Metal range hood filters collect grease. If you cook often, monthly cleaning is reasonable. Check the manual before putting filters in the dishwasher, and replace charcoal filters instead of washing them unless the manual says otherwise.

Watch dryer performance

Clean the lint screen every load. Monthly, pay attention to drying time. If towels or jeans suddenly need a second cycle, check the vent path, the transition hose behind the dryer, and the exterior flap.

Longer drying time is one of the clearest early warnings that airflow is restricted.

Check softener salt and exterior changes

If you have a water softener, check the salt level monthly. If the brine tank runs empty, hard water can return and contribute to mineral buildup in fixtures and appliances.

After heavy weather, walk the outside. Look for clogged downspouts, standing water, loose siding, damaged screens, branches touching the house, or soil washed away near drainage points.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Monthly: filters, alarms, leak checks, toilet checks, and weather walkaround.
  • Every load: dryer lint screen.
  • Often used kitchens: dishwasher and range hood filters monthly.
  • Seasonally: gutters, AC prep, heating prep, outdoor water, and storm tasks.
Add the monthly checklist to the Dome mobile app once. Dome is coming soon to iOS, so the same boring tasks can come back automatically without calendar clutter or a spreadsheet.
