For many tank water heaters, flushing about once a year is a practical default. Hard water, visible sediment, rumbling, or heavy use may shorten the interval. Tankless water heaters usually need descaling instead, based on water hardness and the manual.
Quick schedule
- Most tank water heaters: about once a year.
- Hard water areas: check the manual and consider more frequent service.
- Soft water or low sediment homes: the interval may be longer.
- Tankless water heaters: follow descaling guidance, not tank flushing advice.
- Very old or neglected tanks: consider calling a plumber before disturbing the drain valve.
Why flushing matters
Minerals and sediment can settle at the bottom of a tank water heater. That layer can reduce efficiency, create rumbling or popping sounds, and make the burner or heating elements work harder.
Sediment is more likely in hard water areas. If the heater already pops or rumbles, sediment may be part of the problem.
Signs it may need flushing
- Rumbling, popping, or crackling noises from the tank.
- Hot water runs out faster than before.
- Cloudy or gritty water from hot taps.
- Gritty water from the drain valve.
- The heater has not been serviced in years.
Rusty water can also mean corrosion in the tank or plumbing. Do not assume flushing will fix rust.
When not to flush it yourself
Be careful with old tanks that have never been flushed. Opening a weak drain valve can create a leak, and disturbing sediment in a badly corroded tank can expose problems that were already there.
Call a plumber if the tank leaks, is badly rusted, lacks clear shutoffs, is installed where a leak would cause major damage, or you are unsure how to shut off power, gas, or water safely.
Basic flushing process
- Read the manufacturer instructions for your model.
- Turn off power to an electric heater or set a gas heater according to the manual.
- Turn off the cold water supply if the instructions call for it.
- Let the water cool enough to reduce scald risk.
- Attach a hose to the drain valve and route it to a safe drain.
- Open a hot water tap if the manual calls for it.
- Open the drain valve and flush until water runs clearer.
- Refill the tank fully before restoring power to an electric heater.
Good maintenance rhythm
- Yearly: consider flushing a tank water heater if the manual supports it.
- More often: hard water, heavy sediment, or repeated rumbling.
- At each check: look for leaks, corrosion, odd noises, and unsafe venting concerns.
- Tankless: descale on the manufacturer's schedule.
