Test GFCI outlets monthly, especially near water and damp areas. A GFCI that won't trip or reset should be replaced by a qualified electrician.

Where to check

  • Bathrooms.
  • Kitchens.
  • Garages.
  • Basements and crawlspaces.
  • Laundry areas.
  • Outdoor outlets.
  • Any outlet near water.

How to test a GFCI outlet

  1. Plug in a small lamp or tester.
  2. Press the Test button.
  3. Confirm power turns off.
  4. Press Reset.
  5. Confirm power returns.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International says GFCIs should be tested every month to make sure they are working. If the device doesn't behave as expected, don't ignore it.

When to call an electrician

  • The Test button does nothing.
  • The outlet won't reset.
  • Power stays on after testing.
  • The outlet is warm, cracked, buzzing, or scorched.
  • You aren't sure which outlet protects downstream receptacles.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Test monthly, and add an extra check after electrical work, water leaks near outlets, exterior outlet damage, or tripped circuits that seem unusual.
