Replace air purifier filters on the manufacturer schedule, then adjust for runtime, pets, dust, smoke, and visible filter loading. A filter that runs all day in a dusty room won't age like one used occasionally in a clean bedroom.

The practical schedule

  • Pre filters: clean or replace on the model schedule, often every few weeks to 3 months.
  • HEPA filters: follow the model schedule, often around 6 to 12 months depending on use.
  • Carbon filters: follow the model schedule, often around 3 to 6 months, especially for odors.
  • Heavy smoke, pets, dust, or wildfire season: check more often.

Those ranges are only a starting point. The manual and filter indicator matter because designs vary.

Why the schedule varies so much

Air purifiers aren't all built the same. Some use washable pre filters. Some use sealed HEPA cartridges. Some combine HEPA and carbon in one filter. Some calculate runtime. Others use a simple timer.

Signs a filter is due

  • The filter indicator is on.
  • Airflow feels weaker than usual.
  • The unit is louder at the same setting.
  • Odors return quickly after cooking or cleaning.
  • The filter looks gray, dusty, or packed.
  • Allergy or smoke season has been heavy.

Do washable filters replace HEPA filters?

Usually no. A washable pre filter catches larger dust and hair before they reach the main filter. It helps the main filter last longer, but it isn't the same as replacing a loaded HEPA filter.

Don't wash a HEPA filter unless the manufacturer says it is washable. Many aren't.

Carbon filters age differently

Carbon helps with odors and gases, but it can saturate. If the purifier still moves air well but odors return fast, the carbon filter may be spent even if the particle filter looks acceptable.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • The EPA says all filters need regular replacement, and a dirty, overloaded filter won't work well.
  • Save the model number, filter part number, and replacement date.
  • Check pre filters monthly if you have pets or visible dust.
  • Replace main filters on the manual schedule or sooner when performance changes.
